Powerful winter gusts brought walls down upon flimsy shelters housing Palestinians displaced by war in Gaza, killing at least 4 people. These deaths underscores the perilous living conditions that persist after more than two years of intense bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Offers Little Relief from Harsh Weather

While a truce has been active since last fall, aid groups state that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate shelter necessary to survive recurring winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to witness death in every possible way," said a family member after the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed onto their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. At least five others were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on that day started clearing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population live in makeshift shelters since their houses were reduced to ruins during the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, reports more than four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals since the truce went into effect. A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that no fewer than one hundred children below eighteen years old – sixty boys and 40 girls – had been killed since the truce began because of military operations, including drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and employment of bullets. Those figures, he explained, reflected incidents where enough details had been compiled to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have decreased' during the truce, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over 2 million people has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the colder season. It’s the 3rd winter after the war involving Israel and the group began on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed around twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports over 71,400 people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
