This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
