This Special Release Pokémon Card Aims to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store featuring special merchandise. Enthusiasts can look forward to offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork all inspired by the museum's aesthetic. The big draw, however, will be a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. The store is scheduled both on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book Behind the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume filled with stunning artwork that show creatures in their wild environments. It's essentially like what an in-world scientist could produce once adventurers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin might have created had the famous islands teemed with Pidgeys rather than finches. A key appeal lies in the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Promo Card Stand Out

It is common for The Pokémon Company to release cards for major tournaments and brand collaborations. A lot such promotional cards typically highlight the iconic electric rodent who serves as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new promotion apart however, is the unusually large dimensions. Although precise specs have not been publicly disclosed, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, and customers able to get just one card per purchase.

Curbing Speculator Interest

Per an official announcement, a portion of the merchandise may also be available outside the museum walls. However, a wider release will only be select retailers within the UK. Critically, collectors cannot purchase this promo through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, it appears they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those unable to attend, there is the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases from the Museum shop and its online store, including Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists dedicated to conducting studies to discover solutions to the global ecological crisis," the statement notes.
