For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
