Pacific Bluefin Tuna Commands Unprecedented Bid of $3.2m at Tokyo Auction

A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets across the country and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna signals good luck," stated the company president, a regular bidder at the annual new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder informed reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," adding, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This new acquisition surpasses his previous historic purchases:

• He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
• He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
• In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to surpass his personal record once again.

A Tradition of High Prices

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction concluded.
