Our team is checking images and video posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
