A Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Caused in the US

One year ago, the landscape was entirely distinct. Ahead of the American presidential vote, reflective Americans could recognize the country's serious imperfections – its injustices and disparity – however they could still identify it as America. A democracy. A country where legal governance held significance. A country headed by a dignified and decent leader, notwithstanding his elderly years and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, this autumn, countless Americans scarcely know the country we inhabit. People believed to be undocumented migrants are rounded up and pushed into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The left side of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for an obscene dance hall. The leader is targeting his adversaries or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department surrender an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are dispatched to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, rebranded the Department of War, has – in effect – freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses potentially totaling almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are treated like aristocracy.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the limit into autocracy and totalitarianism,” a noted author, wrote in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I thought feasible, it did happen here.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. And it is hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we are, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

Nevertheless, it is known that Trump was legitimately chosen. Despite his highly troubling previous administration and despite the warnings associated with the knowledge of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly declared plainly he intended to be a dictator just on day one – enough Americans chose him over the other candidate.

Frightening as the current reality are, it’s even scarier to realize that we are just three-quarters of a year into this administration. Where will three more years of this deterioration position us? And if that period becomes an prolonged era, because there is not anyone to restrain this leader from deciding that a third term is necessary, possibly for security concerns?

Admittedly, all is not lost. There are congressional elections next year that could create a new political equilibrium, in case Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. We have public servants who are striving to impose certain responsibility, like Democratic congressmen currently initiating an inquiry concerning the try to money grab from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in 2028 could begin us down the road toward restoration just as the prior selection set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist millions of Americans marching in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is awakening”, just as it did following the Red Scare in that decade or throughout the Vietnam war protests or in the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

He claims he knows the indicators of that revival and observes it occurring currently. For proof, he points to the recent massive protests, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a personality's dismissal and the almost universal defiance by media to accept government requirements they solely cover authorized information.

“The dormant force perpetually exists asleep before specific greed turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so offensive of societal benefit, certain violence so loud, that it has no choice other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll be validated.

In the meantime, the crucial issues remain: is the US able to ever recover? Can it reclaim its standing globally and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or should we recognize that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be lost. My positive feelings, however, convinces me that we need to strive, in whatever ways available.

For me, as a media critic, that involves urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For others, it could mean engaging with congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to safeguard electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or in several years? The truth is, we don’t know. All we can do is to strive to not give up.
